EPD Activities

Summary

In 2024, CEJ launched the Environmental Protection Dialogue (EPD) Implementation Strategy 2024–2027, a roadmap guiding actions to strengthen environmental policy, community participation, and cross-sector collaboration for sustainability. Following the launch, CEJ has been implementing various activities under the Strengthening the Respect of Environmental Rights in Zambia (SR4ERZ) project, supported by the European Union (EU).

These efforts aim to deepen the culture of environmental responsibility, promote climate justice, and enhance the protection of environmental and community rights across Zambia.

1. Advocacy and Lobbying for the Establishment of an Environmental Tribunal/Specialized Environmental Court

Environmental degradation and challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are escalating globally, making an urgent need for effective dispute resolution mechanisms around environmental issues. Establishing an Environmental Tribunal or a specialized Environmental Court can provide dedicated judicial resources that are expert in environmental law, thereby ensuring that environmental laws are enforced and protected. This meeting aims to carry out advocacy campaigns and lobby relevant stakeholders for the establishment of such a tribunal or court.

This dialogue took place at the Radisson Blue hotel in Lusaka Zambia on 30th July 2025 which attracted CSOs, Government Ministries and Judiciary and Environmental Law institutions.

2. Capacity building workshops on land-based investments and environmental governance

Traditional leaders play a critical role in land-based investments and natural resource management, yet their involvement requires strengthened capacity to ensure inclusive environmental governance. Reinforcing their knowledge and skills in these domains, while equipping them with a conceptual understanding of their responsibilities, enables more effective participation in decision-making processes and promotes sustainable outcomes in land-based investments. This workshop took place at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe, Zambia on 16th October 2025.

3. Community Training Initiatives on Environmental Monitoring

Environmental degradation poses serious threats to public health, biodiversity, and sustainable development. Many communities lack the skills and resources necessary to monitor their local environments effectively. Additionally, the absence of local reporting mechanisms can lead to unaddressed environmental violations, impacting communities disproportionately.

This initiative aimed to empower local communities by providing the necessary training, tools, and support to monitor environmental conditions actively and report violations. By fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, we can enhance the community’s ability to advocate for their environment and effect positive change. This workshop took place at Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe, Zambia on 14th – 15th October 2025.
