CEJ Leads Grassroots Action in Serenje for World Environment Day 2025

The Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) joined Serenje Town Council, waste pickers, and other local partners in commemorating World Environment Day 2025, under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event aimed to raise awareness and promote community action to combat the growing threat of plastic waste.

Radio Dialogue on Plastic Pollution

Ahead of the main event, CEJ participated in a live radio panel featuring local government, waste pickers, and health officials. The discussion addressed the health and environmental impacts of plastic pollution, and emphasized the importance of behavior change and community involvement.
CEJ highlighted its ongoing work in Serenje, including:
– Environmental and human rights education in schools and communities;
– Supporting the Forestry Department with tree nursery tools and water system;
– Promoting sustainable alternatives through village banking;
– Advocating for stronger waste management policies with local leaders.

Community Clean-Up and Youth Engagement

On June 5th, a cleanup campaign was held in the town center and main market, focusing on plastic waste collection and promoting the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. CEJ mobilized youth and conservation clubs to lead by example, educating the public on responsible waste disposal.

Call to Action

CEJ urged young people to become active environmental stewards, stressing that small actions—like refusing single-use plastics or joining clean-up campaigns—can lead to big change. The organization also called for stronger partnerships across sectors to scale sustainable practices.

Conclusion

The commemoration reaffirmed CEJ’s commitment to empowering communities to tackle plastic pollution through advocacy, education, and sustainable livelihoods. With continued collaboration, Serenje can move toward a cleaner and greener future.
